Poetry bei Hesse

I am a big fan of the German author Hermann Hesse, so I just wanted to give you a small sampling of his works. These are some of my favorite pieces.

Into the Fog
To wander in fog--how queer!
Lonely are bush and stone,
No tree sees the other near,
Each is alone.

Once my world was full of friends,
When my life still had light;
Now that the fog descends,
Not one is in sight.

Only he is wise who knows
The steady gloom to fall
That slowly round him grows,
Severed from all.

To wander in fog--how queer!
Solitude is life's own.
No man sees the other near,
Each is alone.

I really love that, and I can't even explain why. Hesse is just really cool.

Same poem, different languages

Schicksal

Wir sind in Zorn und Unverstand
Wie Kinder tun, geschieden
Und haben uns gemieden,
Von blöder Scham gebannt.

Die Jahre gingen drüber her
Mit Reuen und mit Warten
In unsern Jugendgarten
Führt keine Strasse mehr.

Destiny

In our fury and muddle
We act like children, cut off,
Fled from ourselves,
Bound by silly shame.

The years clump past
In their agony, waiting.
Not a single path leads back
To the garden of our youth.

Über die Felder . . .

Über den Himmel Wolken ziehn
Über die Felder geht der Wind,
Über die Felder wandert
Miener Mutter verlorenes Kind.

Über die Strasse Blätter wehn,
Über den Bäumen Vögel schrein--
Irgendwo über den Bergen
Muss meine ferne Heimat sein.

Across the Fields . . .

Across the sky, the clouds move,
Across the fields, the wind,
Across the fields the lost child
Of my mother wanders.

Across the street, leaves blow,
Across the trees, birds cry--
Across the mountains, far away,
My home must be.

More to come soon . . .
